Advanced Panel Experience Design
Cumbersome panel layouts were a major pain point for Electronics workspace users in Fusion 360, hindering their creative flow. I led the effort to revamp the panel organization, eliminating limitations and introducing user-friendly features. The result: a cleaner, more efficient design environment that empowers users to unleash their creativity without constraints.

What is Fusion 360?
Fusion 360 is a popular cloud software used by 5 million+ active users to design, create, and manufacture anything from toys to furniture to machine parts. It's like a toolbox for engineers, architects, and designers who want to bring their ideas to life in 3D.

This project focused on improving the "panel experience" within Fusion 360's Electronics workspace.


Problems

The Electronics workspace had more panel needs than any other workspace in Fusion 360. However, the legacy panel experience provided limited options for panel organization. This limitation could reduce customer efficiency and overcrowd the screen.

Additionally, the existing panel behavior was odd. As the Electronics development team planned to introduce a new back-end system for panels, the design team aimed to avoid replicating the undesirable panel behaviors.

Initially, panels could be folded either sideways or upwards, and horizontally arranged next to other panels. While this offered some flexibility, it was rarely used and caused performance issues with the new backend system, increasing the number of bugs and impacting responsiveness.

1. Users could not combine multiple panels into a single entity

2. Users could attach panels to various locations. While offering flexibility, this approach resulted in issues such as unintended panel resizing.

3. Managing multiple panels required manual drag-and-drop, which was cumbersome and time-consuming for users.

New
1. Users can group multiple panels using tabs. This enables better organization and simplifies navigation between the panels.

2. Panels can only be attached in designated locations that ensure optimal usability and prevent unintended behavior.

3. Through the new right-click menu (accessible via a three-dot icon), users can effortlessly manage their panels.

This new feature has changed the behavior of all panels within the Fusion 360 Electronics workspace, affecting over 13,000 monthly active users. The ultimate goal of the project was to extend this panel behavior to other workspaces in Fusion. However, it required further research and validation, and this effort is still ongoing. Up to this point, we went through 8 design iterations based on customer feedback and technical constraints.
